Mind Chimes!

This morning while washing dishes and thinking about our whole "What We Are Reading" thing I remembered my dear friend Jon Brenner. He the first in my long list of "John" mentors; there was Jon Brenner, John Miller (the person that first exposed me to this whole wild world of bodywork), John Upledger (cranialsacral work), John Barnes (myofascial release) and Jean (John) Pierre Barral (visceral manipulation). Crazy John world! So grateful for each of them.

Anyways, I was thinking of the first Jon and we go way back to the early 90's. And we used to write each other letters or talk on landlines. Every communication began or ended with two questions: “what are you reading?” and, “what's on the box?”. (The second question may need some translating, depending on your age. Box, as in boombox, as in lots of D-batteries and mix tapes. For more on mix tapes see Sherman Alexie's amazing poem called, Ode to Mix Tapes)

I'm circling around a few books and one is Interface. And, in heavy rotation is Applewood Road, check out their cover of the REM tune Losing My Religion.

Also, in play is No Name, Chicago-based (gotta represent the hometown!) spoke-word, hip-hop soul artist.

So, all that happened while I was also thinking about the quote below from Interface and our upcoming seminar season, woot!

In our last Jam Session we read this quote from Interface:

“Our images become critical to our success. Our nervous systems reflect these images and the patient receives them through our hands and our minds. The morphogenetic field is there as a reference, the water is the mediator, and the piezoelectric connective tissue is ready to receive.”

It was quite impactful both for me to speak the words out loud and to then to engage in dialogue with the room about the implications. I go on and on about how important it is to be able to visualize the anatomy - it's an image-based language or hieroglyph (more on that soon!) we can use to understand the language of the body. What I especially love in this quote what I had never considered before is the idea that as we visualize the body in its beauty and perfection and its way, that image is communicated through our touch into the nervous system of the person we are contacting and working with! What?!

CUE THE MIND CHIMES! (that's a phrase we use when something is just near too much to handle...).

Mind chimes. Have a beautiful day!

And feel free to let us know what you're reading and what's on the box . . .
